The Island of
Mayreau has quickly become one of my favorite stops in The
Grenadines. It is as close to the Old Caribbean as you can
get. There is a village at the top of the highest
elevation that is home to 262 people, all related.
There is one Catholic Church, one school, four restaurants,
three grocery stores, two roads, and six vehicles. Free-range cattle, goats, and chickens roam
freely through the village.
Many of the homes are quite basic, as they have been for decades. Electricity finally reached the island last year after many
years of waiting.
The people are warm and friendly.
The village is
definitely the Old Caribbean.
It’s like stepping back in time, and being there is
truly a great Caribbean Experience.
The island is home to two
outstanding anchorages; the village is now easily accessible
from either:
