The Secret Anchorage

Chatham Bay is the anchorage that regular visitors to The Grenadines do not want you to know about.  There is a good chance that you will have this place all to yourself, or share it with one or two other boats.  There is a lovely crescent beach of golden sand that is literally deserted.  Solitude - that is why people come here.

Getting There

Sail to the western end of Union Island.  This area is known for extreme gusts of wind that touch down after passing over the island, so reduce sail and be observant.  Round Rapid Point and head directly into the broad sweeping bay.  The water gets deep quite quickly, so you will have to anchor very close to shore, preferably in the northwest corner to minimize the effects of swell and the gusts of wind that blast into the bay.  If there happens to be a few boats anchored in the choice spot, you will have to pick a spot further to the east - just be careful because it is shallow in places.

Ashore

There is really nothing here but a great beach that you will likely have to yourself. One of the Boat Boys has established a small snack bar that operates in high season.  There is a path that leads to Ashton, but only use it if you are an experienced mountaineer.  The real reason you are anchored in Chatham Bay is to get away from everybody, so it is a great anchorage to just stay on the boat and relax.

In high season, a local named Shark Attack hosts a great beach barbecue in that snack bar on the beach.  You do not have to find him, he will find you.  He sends a boy out in a tiny motorboat to take bookings and dinner orders.  Another great Caribbean experience that you should seriously consider.
