One Sleepy Destination

Carriacou is a Grenadine island, but under the authority of the country of Grenada, not St. Vincent and The Grenadines.  It is a fairly large island with a population of about 5,000.  With the exception of Hillsborough, I would describe it as a “sleepy” place that is generally quiet and laid back.  You do not come here to party.

It is a pretty island, but does not offer anything special that is not available on any of the other Grenadine Islands.  In other words, if you are already in The Grenadines, it is probably not worth the hassle of clearing in/out of Customs 4 times just to visit Carriacou for one day.  If you are en route to or from Grenada, then a stop in Carriacou is a great idea.

You need lots of time to appreciate the islands real charm, which is the slow relaxed pace, the peace and quite.  If you have the time, then several days anchored in Tyrrel Bay will be very much appreciated.

Getting There

Carriacou is an hour and a half sail from Union Island, and three hours from the northern tip of Grenada.  There are essentially three anchorages to choose from: Hillsborough, Sandy Island, and Tyrrel Bay.  Of these choices, Tyrrel Bay probably offers the most, although Sandy Island should not be missed.  Least favored is Hillsborough, although you will need to clear Customs there.

The windward side of the island has a few interesting anchorages, but they are guarded by an impressive array of reefs.  Unless you really know your way, they are not recommended.

Carriacou Experiences

If you do find your way to Carriacou, there are some things that you should make an effort to experience:
