Vacation Hot Spot

If there is one spot in the Abacos that can be considered a hot spot, it is Treasure Cay.  Originally a marina and hotel complex, extensive development has resulted in a sizeable community of on-the-water villas, restaurants, a golf course, and shops that has made it an attraction to vacationers from all over North America.  Reachable by road from Marsh Harbor, this is where most people come and stay in this part of the world.

A Smart Alternative

For the cruising sailor, Treasure Cay is very well protected from all sides.  It is an excellent alternative to Green Turtle Cay if The Whale is not possible, simply because it is close by and you can duck in at the last minute.  It affords great protection from westerly winds and you can tie up at the marina to ride out a front that might be passing through.  All the while, you have access to excellent facilities.

For these reasons, it is best to hold the decision to stop at Treasure Cay until the last minute.  In other words, plan to take advantage of the best weather forecast to traverse The Whale and visit Green Turtle Cay.  You can always visit Treasure Cay in any weather condition.

Getting There

Head to the GPS waypoint at N 26° 39.570' W 77° 16.800'.  From there, you should be able to identify green and red channel markers  to the west that will take you through a broad right turn.  Head straight in to the marina, or take one of the few moorings in the basin to your right.  Go to the Marina Office to register.

Ashore

There is a spectacular crescent beach on the north shore that goes on for several miles.  You will find a great beach bar that is worth stopping in to replenish your body fluids on a hot day, should that be necessary.  They have is a volleyball net for the use of bar patrons as well as beach toys, lounge chairs, and windsurfers for rent.

There are a number of restaurants in the immediate area, all worth checking out.  This place has everything - an 18 hole golf course, stores, a bank, and a laundry facility.  Without question, if you are going to be holed up somewhere for a few days, Treasure Cay is as good a place as any.

The Tipsy Seagull

The Tipsy Seagull is located beside the swimming pool between the marina and the hotel, near the dinghy dock.  This place is essential.  After a tough day doing whatever - beach, shopping, getting ice, or nothing at all - stop by the pool, order a beer (or the poison of your choice), ditch some/most (but not all) of ones clothing, and enjoy the pool to cool down.

Where The Tipsy Seagull really pays off is Pizza Night.  Just beside the bar, there are a couple of large pizza ovens that are fired up one or two of nights per week.  It’s simply the best pizza for miles around.  This event attracts many of the residents in the surrounding area as well as hotel guests, so expect a crowd.
